The digital era has ushered in a wave of disruptions, from the way we work and communicate to how we access information and conduct business. The disruptions caused by digitalization are undeniably transformative, but they come with a consequence - a blurred vision of the future. Lionel Lee, Commitee Chair at The Better Foundation, explains the key role that digital literacy plays in providing a clear vision for the real-time applications of these trends in Dinis Guarda YouTube podcast.

Digital Literacy For Digital Inclusion And Digital Disruptions: Lionel Lee, Committee Chair Of The Better Foundation

Disruptions from the digital era are a new norm. So, while technological advancements enable us to make instant connections with people across the world, find access to the vast ocean of knowledge, or automate monotonous tasks, these are also reshaping industries, evolving it over a very short period of time. However, as our world becomes increasingly connected and reliant on digital technologies, the pace of change can be disorienting.

Explaining the crucial role of digital literacy, Lionel Lee said it helps individuals and businesses navigate through the dynamics of this transformative landscape successfully. It empowers individuals on multiple fronts, providing the appropriate tools and solutions that help individuals and businesses adapt to this change.

Stating an example of bringing financial inclusion through technology based platforms, he said:

"The present generation of internet users learn financial concepts from digital sources like TikTok and YouTube. Probably some of these channels and influencers are scammers or may not have enough knowledge themselves.

This is what is causing a higher rate of drop off from the financial security journey."

More importantly, digital literacy is a bridge to social inclusion, ensuring that no one is left behind in an increasingly digital society. Digital literacy equips individuals with the tools to engage meaningfully in the digital realm, opening doors to education, job opportunities, and social connections that were previously inaccessible.

Digital Literacy: Preparing for a lifelong journey

The digital landscape is continually evolving, with new technologies and platforms emerging regularly. Therefore, individuals must commit to ongoing learning and skill development. Fortunately, the internet itself is a vast repository of knowledge, offering countless opportunities for self-improvement.

Digital literacy empowers individuals to be discerning consumers of information. It enables individuals to separate fact from fiction, promoting a more informed and responsible digital citizenship.

Digital literacy is more than just knowing how to operate a computer or use a smartphone. It encompasses a broad set of skills and competencies. Lionel told Dinis that platforms like The Better Foundation are actively involved in organising programmes and initiatives that bring awareness about the use of the technology and all the related fundamentals across all generations.

"These programmes help users to be able to navigate, evaluate, and critically engage with digital technologies and information. It's about being proficient in using digital tools effectively, discerning the reliability of online content, and safeguarding one's digital identity and privacy", said Lionel.
